A Dynamic Duo?
by Will Blume
Wednesday, February 03, 2010
With the current season looking increasingly less promising each game, I am beginning to look to the future and ask can either Garlon Green or Xavier Roberson assume a prominent role in leading the Frogs to greener pastures? David wrote a while back that Green would be a great player in time. I agree and remain hopeful that he is proven correct. I also agree with David that the Frogs are a better team with Ronnie Moss at the shooting guard rather than being burdened with the duties of playing point guard. Based on that premise, and not knowing exactly what Hank Thorns will bring to the team, I believe Roberson's development to be just as important as Green's.

Garlon Green was the more touted of the two during the recruiting process. Listed at 210 pounds, one would have to assume more weight will be added to his 6''7 frame. In the four games in which Green has played over 25 minutes, he has scored at least eight points. Two of those games were against Big 12 opponents; however, two of those games were against Texas State and St. Gregory. His 2.5 rebounds per game statistic is deceiving because there is a direct correlation between his playing time and how many rebounds he obtained in those games. When given time he has shown that he can rebound sufficiently. It needs to be determined whether Green is going to be a wing player or move to the post. The former would require him to improve significantly on his .217 three-point shooting percentage. The latter would require that he develops or implements a post-up game.

Xavier Roberson brings a lot of appealing skills to the point guard position. He is the best perimeter defender, has shown the ability to hit the open outside shot, and brings a tremendous amount of energy off the bench. Unfortunately, at this stage of his career, Roberson's offense is
limited. He has not yet shown the ability to get his own shot or the ability to create for others. Whether Roberson assumes a role in the starting lineup next season or backs up Hank Thorns, he will need to find a way to be more of a catalyst on offense and improve on his 1-1 assist to turnover ratio.

The team is losing two of their leading scorers at the end of the season, and there is no known ‘blue chip' recruit reported to be coming to Fort Worth next season. This makes the issue of player development imperative to the Frogs appearing in a post season tournament. In short, if the Frogs are going to be successful next year it is going to be due to the improvement of the players currently on the roster. Both Green and Roberson have shown improvement as the season has progressed, the question is what is their ceiling and can they progress significantly towards it in one off-season?
