This Hitters Are For Real
by David Peterson
Saturday, March 06, 2010
So the Frogs win again to run their record to (8-1) overall this year. To be fair, I did not watch the game against Missouri and cannot really speak about that other than to say I am very happy.

What has impressed me thus far is the way our bats have swung thus far. Coming into today, we had only 2 regulars batting below .300 and 1 of those people was All-Conference shortstop Taylor Featherston. It has been a fantastic showing from a group that represented most of the concern surrounding this team. But with as many newcomers as we have, I wonder if it is beginners luck?

I really believe this has nothing to do with beginners luck. In fact, we may not be giving enough credit to the bats for what they have done.

I have compiled a list of pitchers who we have faced thus far and what you will find is 6 of the 9 starting pitchers we have faced are projected to be top 5 round draft picks. And though we have faced 6 future major leaguers, their record against our lineup is (0-4) with 2 no decisions. That takes more than beginners luck.

In the 6 seasons Coach Schlossnagle has been here, the Frogs have won anywhere between 39 and 48 games each year. For the most part, the pitching has won the games for the Frogs. But with where they are today, I am not sure we have ever had this good an offense. I made the bold statement that the Frogs could win 50 games this season if they won 2 out of 3 games this weekend. I would like to augment that by saying they may be able to stay at 10 losses or less. I really believe with their schedule, it is doable. Heck, they have only lost 3 or 5 games in conference each of the last 4 years.

That is a lot of speculation, but for now, I like (8-1) and I would love to finish the weekend strong and get to (9-1). But the major takeaway is the offense is not a flash in the pan, they are for real.
