Sometimes teams can become more than a group of players that you cheer for. Sometimes you can connect with a team in a way that is inexplicable to a non sports fan. Sometimes a team can exemplify some quality, or display some characteristic that makes them special to you. Sometimes a team can exude a trait that we truly appreciate. Sometimes a team demonstrates attributes that we ourselves wish we possessed.
Sometimes a team is special.
In their inaugural College World Series appearance, the Frogs managed to be everything to everyone. They were the ‘Cinderella Story' for ESPN while looking more like a Goliath in the majority of their wins. They were the ‘New Kid' to the citizens of Omaha, while never letting the moment get too big for them. They won behind the ‘star power' of Matt Purke but also as a team with timely hitting and an amazing array of fabulous pitching performances.
What I will remember most about this team is the multitude of critical situations that arose where someone stepped up. Whether it was a clinching home run, key relief appearance, dominant starting pitching performance or a go-ahead grand slam this team showed the heart of a lion. They had such a great ability to come through in the clutch and they provided a plethora of 'moments'. Obviously I wanted the experience of watching my team win a championship and I absolutely abhor watching my teams lose. However, what hurts the most is conceding that these 'moments' are over.
